Bike Ride Yosemite

Been awhile since I last added to our blog, no excuse except I have been having too much fun.

I have a lot to catch up on. The desert was a hard place to leave; it really is beautiful in its own way. The Saguaros are neat. We have been to Sedona, Flagstaff and Sequoia National Park since we left Tucson. Cheryl even ran a 10K at a Pow Wow in Phoenix. Had a small scare when we came almost too close to 3 bears on the trail up from the largest tree in the world, General Sherman, at Sequoia National Park. Will write on that later.

Today we are in Yosemite; if you haven’t been here all I can say is you don’t know what you are missing. Hope my pics will make you want to come here. Click on link the below:

Behind on our posts

Blogging is not easy! I don’t know how other people manage to blog daily, but we’re always so busy with every day things – traveling from place to place, upkeep on the camper, daily chores, and visiting beautiful, interesting places – I don’t feel much like doing anything at night but resting up for the next day! So, sorry all (Hi Robert! ) for not keeping more up-to-date with our blog entries. There are lots of things we’ve done and seen that I need to write about and Chuck needs to upload pictures of. We will get them online eventually, a little at a time. Until then, please keep checking and looking for entries. Today, “Where are we now?” was updated. Yosemite National Park in California – our should I say, Heaven? is our current location. Words simply can’t describe the beauty here…

Yosemite!

We are currently staying at Yosemite Lakes – a Thousand Trails RV Campground – 5 miles from the West entrance to Yosemite National Park in California. We have a riverfront site – gorgeous! Of course, it can’t compare to the sites of Yosemite National Park itself, which we spent all day gazing at today. Will write more later, but for now it’s off to bed.

Campground Review: Carefree RV Park

Carefree RV Park is located in Apache Junction, AZ.

WiFi is available and free, but you will need an access code (given at check-in). It is only good for 2 days at a time, and expires on its own. You will need to get the new code every two days. It’s also quite  slow – but better than nothing.

Carefree has a swimming pool, hot tub, showers, laundry, book/mag exchange. Game area with pool tables, games, puzzles. TV area with kitchen.

Be aware that the washers and dryers in the laundry room require the purchase of a loadable card from a machine. It’s like buying a prepaid phone card. The card itself costs $5 to obtain, $2 of which is for the card alone so you only get $3 worth of washing money with the initial purchase. After that, you can re-load it in $5 increments. You then put the card in each washer and dryer and it deducts the cost of the load from the card. This is the first time I’ve ever seen this kind of system and initially I wasn’t too happy with it. By the nature of the system you may never use all the money loaded on the card. If every campground used it it would be a very efficient system and would negate the need for always having quarters around. However, with this the only park I’ve seen in almost a year on the road, I doubt I’ll ever use it again. And it still has money left on it. I’ll keep it just in case. We’ll see how long before I see this system again.

Carefree RV Park has activities for residents  in winter. Apparently by the last week in April, nothing is going on anymore. The Newspaper box said ‘see you next fall’.

They do have a dog walk. It’s nice, but not on the park map and we were not informed by management. We found out about it when someone told us while walking Shadow. It was clean and a good size area, but all rock. Really tough on the paw pads. Dogs in the desert need some soft ground for tender or small paws.

This campground accepts all member discounts. We used our Escapees membership to get 50% off the regular rate. They do charge extra for electric ($2 day), which seems pretty standard in the Desert Southwest. It was a quiet park. It seemed like mostly a snowbird park with park model MHs.

All-in-all Carefree RV Park was a nice stay and we would recommend it to others, but use the Escapees discount to get the most from your money.

Tucson Indian Center Bike Ride

Mmmm Mmmm good!

Mmmm Mmmm good!

As part of Tucson’s Clean Air Days and Bike Festival 2009 month long festivities, the Tucson Indian Center sponsored a community bike ride Saturday. The ride was along Santa Cruz River. It has been awhile since we did a ride together and it really felt great. We got two t-shirts to celebrate the ride. We went back to the base where they were having Family Day and had a free lunch. Shadow really enjoyed this because she had one of her favorite treats, ice cream. Then to top off the day we did a geocache on the base and Shadow made out again! She received a stuffed toy. Tax Day Tea Party

Couldn't have said it better...

Couldn't have said it better...

All I can say is “Wow” and “It’s about time!” Have you seen the news regarding the Tax Day Tea Parties organized by www.taxdayteaparties.com going on around the country today?

We hadn’t heard anything about them until we watched the evening news and I must say, it’s amazing (and refreshing) to see Americans actually being revolutionaries again – not afraid to stand up and be heard. It’s how our country was formed and how our founding fathers would expect ‘the people’ to act when protecting their rights and freedoms (regardless of political affiliation). And personally, after several days of pouring over our own tax returns and finally getting them filed, we completely understand the frustration. Our system is a mess. It’s way overdue for a massive overhaul.

Happy Easter

City of Rocks, NM Bunny Rabbit

Just a note from Chuck, Shadow, and me to wish you all a very Happy Easter. Today we’re going to take a ride out to Saguaro National Park (East & West) to check out the cactus and Saguaro blooms. We’ve started to see buds on the Saguaros on base in the past couple of days, so we think they should bloom very soon. With yesterday’s wonderful rains (it rained on and off all day – the first REAL rain we’ve seen in months) things should start really popping around here. It’s a beautiful day for Easter here in Tucson and we hope it’s just as beautiful where you are as well.

Pima Air and Space Museum, Tucson,AZ

Just a note to wish you all a very Happy Easter.
Yesterday we went to the Pima Air and Space Museum in Tucson, AZ. If you ever get out this way this is one place you have to see in person. First, they actually let dogs in to see history too. How great is that? The first plane we saw made me feel real good – it was a Burt Rutan design Long Ez. As soon as you walk in, WOW. How cool is that? There are over 300 planes there. I’ll put more pics on my site later. We walked through Air Force One, the one Kennedy and Johnson used. You just have to see this place….
Just wanted to let everyone know we haven’t completely forgotten how to blog.

Camping Life Magazine – another victim of the bad economy?

Old Cover

Old Cover

In July 2008 we subscribed to Camping Life magazine. Recently we realized we hadn’t received an issue in a while, so we went online to their website (campinglife.com) to check things out. The site existed and showed excerpts of the latest issue. We bookmarked the site and decided to wait until our next mail delivery to see if an issue might finally appear. When it didn’t, we went back to the site to try to contact someone. Now the site is called Bass and Walleye Boats magazine even though the URL is still campinglife.com. What the heck?! Attempts to contact anyone via the site lead to missing pages. Thinking the site might have been hijacked, we googled for any info or other subscribers also wondering where their magazine went. No luck. We don’t know what happened, but Camping Life magazine appears to be no more.

Is this another example of the economy getting to the RV industry? We’ve read in the news of many RV manufacturers going out of business or being in trouble. The Affinity Group (the parent company for Good Sam Club, Camping World, and Woodall’s and more, and also publishes numerous RV and outdoor life magazines) is the publisher for Camping Life. It just so happens that in early March, the Affinity Group made Moody’s list of companies most likely to go bust this year. RV Travel reported that Good Sam Club is suspending their print magazine, Highways, beginning this August in favor of an online digital version only. (Advertisement revenue appears to be down. A digital version certainly would save costs.) Perhaps Camping Life is the first to go of the Affinity Group? If so, it would have been nice to have been notified, versus just leaving subscribers to wonder. Caveat Emptor – particularly in this economy!

UPDATE: We managed to email Camping Life (and get a response) on Monday, 4/13. Their website is back to normal, though no one at the magazine would respond to our repeated question as to what happened to it over the weekend.

Mail woes…

We spent a lot of time today trying to track down a package of mail we had sent to us via our mail forwarding service (we use Good Sam Club) where you pay a monthly subscription plus actual mailing costs for them to receive your mail and forward it to any destination you request. This is a must-have for any full-time RVer. We haven’t had any problems with this before, but there is always a first time for everything and today was our day.
